How It Works

The calculation is a simple three-step conversion. First, the calculator converts your chosen unit into grams using a standard portion weight. Second, it multiplies that weight by the protein density, expressed as grams of protein per 100 g of food. Third, it expresses the result as a percentage of the FDA's Daily Value of 50 g of protein for an adult on a 2,000-calorie diet.

Protein (g) = amount × grams per unit × density ÷ 100

For example, one wedge of lime weighs about 5 g. At 0.7 g protein per 100 g, a single wedge provides 5 × 0.7 ÷ 100 = 0.035 g of protein — roughly 0.07% of the daily value. The portion weights used in this tool are taken from USDA FoodData Central averages and are slightly rounded for clarity.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Don't confuse juice weight with whole-fruit weight. A cup of lime juice is heavier than a cup of raw pieces and has a different protein density (0.42 vs 0.7 g per 100 g). Always match the food form to the unit you selected.

Don't use whole-lime weight for juice amounts. If a recipe calls for 30 mL of lime juice, that is about 30 g of juice, not 30 g of whole lime. Using the wrong base weight can roughly double your estimate.
