The Math Behind Glycemic Load

Glycemic load combines carbohydrate quality (measured by GI) with carbohydrate quantity. The formula is:

GL = (GI × available carbohydrates per serving) ÷ 100
Available carbohydrates = total carbohydrates − dietary fiber

Fiber is subtracted because it is not digested into glucose in the small intestine and therefore does not raise blood sugar the same way as starch or sugar. This is why two foods with the same total carb count can have very different effects on blood glucose.

The final GL is interpreted with standard thresholds: ≤10 is low, 11–19 is medium, and ≥20 is high. The GI scale still refers to the food’s overall effect, but the GL accounts for how much of that food is on your plate.
