How It Works

The glycemic index (GI) tells you how quickly a food's carbohydrate raises blood sugar compared with pure glucose, but it does not account for how much carbohydrate you actually eat. Glycemic load (GL) fills that gap by combining GI with the carbohydrate content of your chosen serving.

GL = (GI × grams of available carbohydrate in the serving) ÷ 100

Most published GL calculations use 'available carbohydrate,' which is total carbohydrate minus fiber. Fiber is not broken down into glucose during digestion, so ignoring it can overstate a food's true glycemic effect. This calculator subtracts fiber before applying the formula. For raw tomatoes the difference is small, but for sun-dried tomatoes it is meaningful because they contain about 6–7 g of fiber per 100 g.

Notice that even a fairly large bowl of raw or cherry tomatoes stays in the low-GL zone. Sun-dried tomatoes are still low at the labeled serving, but the margin is much smaller, and a larger handful can approach the medium range.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Using GI alone. A food can have a low GI but a meaningful GL if you eat a large amount, and vice versa. Always scale by serving.
  • Choosing the wrong tomato type. Sun-dried tomatoes are roughly six times more carbohydrate-dense than raw tomatoes by weight. Read labels and measure dry weight.
  • Forgetting unit conversion. One cup of chopped tomato is not 100 g; it is closer to 180 g. A medium whole tomato is about 123 g. Use the unit option or weigh your serving.
